Rugby at Altitude: Do Highveld Grounds Mean More Points?
Thin air at Loftus, Ellis Park and Bloemfontein lifts scoring sharply. It does not, on these results, hand the home side a bigger edge than the coast does.

- Question
- Do rugby union matches at the high-altitude Highveld grounds of South Africa produce more points or a bigger home edge than matches at sea level?
- Survey
- 225 matches at South African grounds, April 2022 to June 2026
- 60.1average points per match on the Highveld

- 71.2%Highveld matches over 50.5 points
- +16.6 ptshome edge over strength at altitude
Every season someone tells me the Highveld is worth a converted try to the home side. I wanted to split that into two questions: does altitude change how many points get scored, and does it change who wins? Those two questions price very different markets, and on my rugby predictions page I treat them separately for exactly that reason.
The answer is lopsided. Matches at the three grounds sitting roughly 1,350-1,750 metres above sea level averaged 60.1 points, against 49.6 at South Africa's coastal grounds. That is a gap of +10.5 points per match. The home edge, measured against team strength, is real at altitude but not larger than at the coast. The thin air moves the totals line far more than the handicap.
Ground 1Highveld matches carry about ten extra points
The bars compare the average combined score at the Highveld grounds, the coastal South African grounds and every other URC and European cup ground. The coast at 49.6 and the wider baseline at 49.5 are almost identical. The Highveld sits well clear at 60.1 across 111 games.
View the data: average match total: highveld v coast
| Points per match (both teams) | |
|---|---|
| Highveld grounds | 60.1 pts |
| South African coastal grounds | 49.6 pts |
| Other URC and cup grounds | 49.5 pts |
For me this is the headline. The coast behaves like an ordinary URC venue, so the jump is not simply about playing in South Africa. Something about the high grounds opens matches up. My reading is that tired legs in thin air leave gaps in the defensive line during the final quarter, which is when benches empty and conditioning starts to tell.
Ground 2Low-scoring games almost vanish at altitude
This chart splits matches into scoring bands. On the Highveld, 47.7% reached 60 points or more and only 9.0% finished under 40. At the coast those shares were 27.2% and 25.4%, and the other grounds look much like the coast.
For totals bettors, the bottom band matters as much as the top. A tight, kick-dominated arm wrestle under 40 points happens about a quarter of the time by the sea and rarely at altitude.
View the data: how many points get scored
| Under 40 | 40-49 | 50-59 | 60+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highveld grounds | 9.0% | 17.1% | 26.1% | 47.7% |
| SA coastal grounds | 25.4% | 24.6% | 22.8% | 27.2% |
| Other URC and cup grounds | 27.9% | 24.3% | 24.7% | 23.1% |
On the standard line, 71.2% of Highveld matches went over 50.5 points, which works out at fair odds of 1.40. At the coast the share was 45.6%, with fair odds of 2.19. If a bookmaker prices a Pretoria or Johannesburg total as if it were a Durban one, that difference is the opening a bettor should be looking for.
Ground 3Home sides beat expectations, but not most at altitude
Union records here carry results only, with no prices. So I measure home edge against a results-only rating model that estimates how often the home side would win on a neutral field. On the Highveld, home sides won 72.5% against 55.9% expected, an edge of +16.6 points (ยฑ8.3). At the coast they won 78.9% against 57.5% expected, an edge of +21.4 points (ยฑ7.5).
View the data: home sides at altitude: expected v won
| Strength-only chance | Home side won | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highveld grounds (111 matches) | 55.9% | 72.5% | ยฑ8.3 |
| SA coastal grounds (114 matches) | 57.5% | 78.9% | ยฑ7.5 |
| Other URC and cup grounds (885 matches) | 49.9% | 64.2% | ยฑ3.2 |
The ranges overlap heavily. With about a hundred-odd matches per ground type, a few points of difference in home edge tells us very little, while a gap of ten points in totals is a meaningful finding. The other URC and cup grounds come in at +14.3, so all South African venues are hard places to win. I would not add an extra altitude premium to a home handicap on this evidence.
Ground 4Overseas visitors drive the scoring jump
Splitting by visitor shows where the extra points come from. Highveld matches against overseas sides averaged 62.5 points, and 65.5% went over 55.5. The same fixture type at the coast averaged 50.4, with 33.3% over that line. South African derbies on the Highveld averaged 52.4, still higher than the 46.9 at the coast, but the step up is smaller.
Notice the visitor points column. Overseas sides scored 24.5 a game at altitude but only 18.1 at the coast, while still losing most of those matches.
| Ground type ยท visitor | Matches | Home win | Avg total | Visitor pts | Over 55.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highveld ยท SA visitor | 27 | 51.9% | 52.4 | 25.1 | 37.0% |
| Highveld ยท overseas visitor | 84 | 79.2% | 62.5 | 24.5 | 65.5% |
| Coast ยท SA visitor | 27 | 74.1% | 46.9 | 20.3 | 22.2% |
| Coast ยท overseas visitor | 87 | 80.5% | 50.4 | 18.1 | 33.3% |
Visitor rows hold 20-90 matches each, so treat them as indicative only.
That points to open, high-scoring defeats rather than blowouts. It fits with Highveld matches finishing within 7 points 27.0% of the time, against 35.1% at the coast. The main caveat sits here too: the Highveld rows are mostly the Bulls and Lions and the coastal rows mostly the Stormers and Sharks, so club style and altitude are tangled together. These visitor rows are small samples and are indicative only.
Where to look
- Lean over on Highveld totals
71.2% of Highveld matches cleared 50.5 points, so a line set at coastal levels deserves a hard look at the over.
- Target overseas visits specifically
Highveld fixtures against overseas sides averaged 62.5 points, and the visitors still scored 24.5 a game, so the over and the visitor's team total both come into play.
- Skip the altitude handicap premium
The Highveld home edge of +16.6 points is not larger than the coast's +21.4. Price the home handicap on team strength and general South African home advantage, not on altitude.
