Highest-Scoring NHL Arenas: Where Do Totals Go Over 5.5 Most?
Across 19,070 NHL home-arena games, the gap between the highest- and lowest-scoring buildings is real. But the team playing in each building explains most of it.

Totals bettors love a venue angle, and hockey offers plenty of folklore about fast ice, lively boards and buildings where goals just seem to arrive. I wanted to test that against the record. The question is simple: in which NHL arenas do games produce the most goals, and where do they go over 5.5 most often?
The headline answer is Rogers Place in Edmonton, at 6.51 goals per game and a 60.8% over 5.5 rate, against a league average of 5.87 goals and 50.8% overs. The spread between buildings is meaningful. The more important finding, though, is how much of it belongs to the team rather than the rink. That is why arena context feeds into my NHL predictions page as a background note and not as a reason to bet on its own.
Ground 1Edmonton's Rogers Place sits clear at the top of scoring
This chart ranks the top eight and bottom eight buildings by goals per game across regular season and playoffs. Rogers Place leads at 6.51 over 436 games. The Los Angeles arena sits at the bottom with 5.40 over 626 games, a gap of 1.11 goals between the extremes. Tampa, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Seattle form a tight group just above six goals, while Madison Square Garden, TD Garden and the Xcel Energy Center fill out the lower end.

| T-Mobile Arena (VGK) | 6.09 goals |
| Madison Square Garden (NYR) | 5.7 goals |

| Xcel Energy Center (MIN) | 5.64 goals |
| Prudential Center (NJD) | 5.63 goals |
| Gila River Arena (ARI/PHX) | 5.54 goals |
| Rexall Place (EDM) | 5.49 goals |
| Joe Louis Arena (DET) | 5.49 goals |
| Los Angeles arena (LAK) | 5.4 goals |
Look at Edmonton's old home, Rexall Place, which sits near the bottom at 5.49. It is the same city and market, yet the two buildings sit at almost opposite ends of the chart. That is the main caveat for this whole study. Raw arena scoring mostly measures the home team's attack, defence and goaltending, not anything about the ice, so these figures describe who played there rather than a permanent property of the building.
Ground 2Rogers Place leads the over 5.5 table by a margin
Across every arena, 50.8% of games went over 5.5, which converts to fair odds of 1.97. Rogers Place cleared that line 60.8% of the time, with a 95% range of ยฑ4.6 and fair odds of 1.65. Benchmark International Arena at 58.6% and Climate Pledge Arena at 57.6% come next.
The sample sizes matter here. Tampa's figure rests on 642 games and carries a range of ยฑ3.8. Seattle's rests on only 210 games, with a range of ยฑ6.7, and Barclays Center's 161 games leave a range of ยฑ7.7. I give the bigger samples far more weight than the newer or shorter-lived buildings.
| Building | Games | Goals/game | Over 5.5 | 95% range | Fair odds | Over 6.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rogers Place (EDM) | 436 | 6.51 | 60.8% | ยฑ4.6 | 1.65 | 51.6% |
| Benchmark International Arena (TBL) | 642 | 6.18 | 58.6% | ยฑ3.8 | 1.71 | 46.6% |
| Climate Pledge Arena (SEA) | 210 | 6.13 | 57.6% | ยฑ6.7 | 1.74 | 41.0% |
| PPG Paints Arena (PIT) | 641 | 6.16 | 56.3% | ยฑ3.8 | 1.78 | 44.1% |
| T-Mobile Arena (VGK) | 407 | 6.09 | 56.0% | ยฑ4.8 | 1.79 | 44.0% |
| Detroit (new arena) (DET) | 351 | 6.12 | 55.3% | ยฑ5.2 | 1.81 | 44.4% |
| Scotiabank Saddledome (CGY) | 588 | 6.06 | 54.9% | ยฑ4.0 | 1.82 | 43.0% |
| Scotiabank Arena (TOR) | 613 | 6.16 | 54.5% | ยฑ3.9 | 1.84 | 44.2% |
| Barclays Center (NYI) | 161 | 6.09 | 54.0% | ยฑ7.7 | 1.85 | 44.1% |
| Nationwide Arena (CBJ) | 590 | 5.99 | 53.6% | ยฑ4.0 | 1.87 | 42.4% |
The over 6.5 column widens the picture further: 51.6% at Rogers Place against 39.9% across all arenas. At the other end, Rexall Place had the lowest over 5.5 rate of the 36 buildings with 150+ games, at 40.4%, which equals fair odds of 2.47.
Ground 3High-scoring arenas shift games out of the low tail
This chart splits final totals into four bands. In the top-5 scoring buildings, 45.8% of games reached 7 or more goals, against 39.9% across all arenas and 34.1% in the bottom-5. The low tail moves the other way: games with 4 or fewer goals made up 20.7% in the top-5 and 31.9% in the bottom-5.
The middle bands barely change. Five-goal games sit at 22 in the top group and 22.9 in the bottom, and six-goal games at 11.5 against 11.1. The difference between high and low buildings comes almost entirely from the tails, not the middle.

| 4 or fewer | 5 | 6 | 7 or more | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top-5 scoring arenas (2,542) | 20.7% | 22.0% | 11.5% | 45.8% |
| All arenas (19,070) | 25.9% | 23.3% | 10.9% | 39.9% |
| Bottom-5 scoring arenas (2,076) | 31.9% | 22.9% | 11.1% | 34.1% |
For a bettor, that points towards alternative lines rather than the standard 5.5. If an edge exists, it shows up in the frequency of blowout totals and grinding low-scoring games.
Ground 4League-wide scoring rise outweighs any single building
The top-5 and bottom-5 groups are tracked season by season against the league line. Scoring in home arenas moved from 5.59 goals per game in 2010-11 to 6.24 in 2025-26. That rise matters more than any building does.
The gap between the groups also narrowed. Top-5 buildings averaged 5.99 against 5.30 for the bottom-5 from 2010-11 to 2018-19. From 2019-20 to 2025-26, the figures were 6.42 against 5.98.

| 2011-12 | 6.13 goals | 5.11 goals | 5.43 goals |

| 2020-21 | 5.87 goals | 5.64 goals | 5.83 goals |
| 2021-22 | 6.42 goals | 6.22 goals | 6.29 goals |
| 2022-23 | 6.6 goals | 6.32 goals | 6.36 goals |
| 2023-24 | 6.56 goals | 6.22 goals | 6.19 goals |
| 2024-25 | 6.25 goals | 5.69 goals | 6.09 goals |
| 2025-26 | 6.54 goals | 5.87 goals | 6.24 goals |
These groups were chosen with hindsight on the full period, which flatters how far apart they look. In future seasons I would expect the distance to be smaller still, especially as rosters turn over.
Where to look
- Start from the league line
League scoring moved from 5.59 to 6.24 goals per game across the period, so judge any total against the current scoring environment first. The building comes second.
- Trust large samples only
Tampa's 58.6% over 5.5 rests on 642 games with a ยฑ3.8 range. Barclays Center's 161 games carry ยฑ7.7, which is too wide to bet on alone.
- Price the tails, not 5.5
Top-5 buildings produced 7 or more goals in 45.8% of games against 34.1% in the bottom-5. Alternative overs and unders are where any arena effect shows up most clearly.
