Betting UFC Apex Cards: Do Favourites Win More in the Small Cage?
The small cage has a reputation for rewarding pressure and punishing hope. The closing prices tell a calmer story, with one sharp exception at the long end of the underdog market.

The UFC Apex is a strange room to fight in. It is a studio with no crowd and, for many cards, a smaller cage, and coaches swear it changes how fights unfold. The question for a bettor is narrower: does the market price Apex fights any differently from arena fights, and does it get them wrong?
My short answer is no. Favourites at the Apex won 67.3% of 1,223 fights against a priced 65.3%, almost the same overperformance seen everywhere else, and blind underdog backing there lost โ11.7% per unit. I treat that as context for the fight-by-fight reads I publish on my UFC betting tips page, not as a shortcut around them.
Ground 1Apex favourites beat their price by a normal margin
Each dumbbell sets the favourite's margin-free closing chance against how often favourites actually won, from the first Apex card on 30 May 2020 onwards. At the Apex the gap is +2.0 points. At all other venues over the same period it is +2.1 points, with favourites winning 68.5% of 1,321 fights against 66.4% priced.
The Apex 95% range is ยฑ2.6 points, so its edge over the price sits inside ordinary variation. The long-run benchmark is tighter still: across 6,661 fights from 2010 to 2025, favourites won 66.4% against 65.9% priced.

| Priced | Actually won | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| UFC Apex (1,223 fights) | 65.3% | 67.3% | ยฑ2.6 |
| Las Vegas arenas (192 fights) | 66.2% | 75.0% | ยฑ6.1 |
| Other US arenas (539 fights) | 66.0% | 66.2% | ยฑ4 |
| Outside the US (590 fights) | 66.8% | 68.5% | ยฑ3.7 |
| All venues 2010-25 (6,661 fights) | 65.9% | 66.4% | ยฑ1.1 |
From the mat, I expected the small cage to show up here. Less room should mean fewer escapes for the fighter being walked down. If that effect exists, the closing line already appears to absorb it.
Ground 2Blind underdog backing bleeds at the Apex
This chart turns win rates into money: a flat unit on every favourite and every underdog at the closing line. Apex favourites returned โ1.4%, which is close to break-even and better than the โ3.0% favourites managed across all venues since 2010. Apex underdogs returned โ11.7%, clearly worse than the long-run underdog figure across all venues.
The outlier is the Las Vegas arena group, where favourites won 75.0% of 192 fights, returned +8.6% and underdogs lost โ32.0%. That is the smallest sample on the page, and the dumbbell above shows its range is wide, so I would not build anything on it.
View the data: flat-stake return by venue type
| Favourites | Underdogs | |
|---|---|---|
| UFC Apex | โ1.4% | โ11.7% |
| Las Vegas arenas | +8.6% | โ32.0% |
| Other US arenas | โ3.9% | โ7.0% |
| Outside the US | โ1.9% | โ11.2% |
| All venues 2010-25 | โ3.0% | โ7.2% |
The Apex numbers look like those outside the US, where underdogs returned โ11.2%. The studio itself does not look special. What it shares with those cards is the price structure, not the room.
Ground 3Short-priced Apex favourites run slightly ahead of their price
Splitting favourites by price shows where the small overperformance comes from. In close Apex fights, with the favourite priced under 60%, favourites won 55.9% of 417 fights, almost exactly their 55.8% price, against 57.6% at other venues. The coin-flip end of the board is priced accurately at the Apex.
Further up, Apex favourites in the 70-80% band won 79.0% against 74.3% priced, and those at 80% or more won 89.1% of 101 fights against 83.9%. Other venues show the same pattern, with heavy favourites winning 91.1% against 84.2%.
| Fav priced at | Apex fights | Apex priced | Apex won | Other fights | Other priced | Other won |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 60% | 417 | 55.8% | 55.9% | 401 | 55.4% | 57.6% |
| 60-70% | 457 | 65.0% | 66.5% | 462 | 65.1% | 65.4% |
| 70-80% | 248 | 74.3% | 79.0% | 334 | 74.6% | 77.5% |
| 80% or more | 101 | 83.9% | 89.1% | 124 | 84.2% | 91.1% |
This fits what I see in Apex matchmaking. A ranked grappler is set against a debutant, the price is steep, and the clash of styles is lopsided enough that the steep price still undersells it. The samples in the top band are small, though, and this pattern is not unique to the studio.
Ground 4Long-shot Apex underdogs land less than priced
The bars show how often underdogs at +200 or longer actually won. At the Apex it was 21.6% of 444 fights, against a priced 24.7%. That is the clearest shortfall in the study, and the Apex sample is the largest of the four groups.
The comparison groups show how much venue groups can disagree on small numbers. Big underdogs won 13.2% in Las Vegas arenas, 20.7% in other US arenas and 25.1% outside the US.
View the data: how often +200 or longer underdogs won
| Underdog win rate when priced at +200 or longer, 2020-25 | |
|---|---|
| UFC Apex (444) | 21.6% |
| Las Vegas arenas (76) | 13.2% |
| Other US arenas (213) | 20.7% |
| Outside the US (263) | 25.1% |
Here is the main caveat. Apex cards carry more debutants and lower-ranked fighters, so any venue effect is tangled up with card quality. A long-shot prospect who is out of his depth is a matchmaking story more than a cage-size story.
Where to look
- Avoid blanket underdog systems
Backing every Apex underdog returned โ11.7% per unit, and +200 dogs won 21.6% against a priced 24.7%. Take a long shot only when the style matchup gives a clear route to victory.
- Respect steep Apex favourites
Favourites priced at 80% or more won 89.1% against 83.9% priced. Look at their method and round markets, because the outright price leaves little value.
- Price close fights on merit
Apex favourites under 60% won 55.9% against 55.8% priced, so the market is accurate there. Your edge has to come from reading range, cardio and grappling, not from the venue.
