Which NBA Arenas Go Over the Total Most? Over/Under by Arena
Some NBA floors look like over machines on paper. I tested whether the building drives totals, or whether the roster living in it does the real work.

Every NBA totals bettor has heard it: some buildings just play fast. Before I let a venue nudge a number on my NBA predictions page, I wanted to know whether the arena itself pushes games over the posted total, or whether that story only appears after the fact. So I took 11,339 home-arena games from 2017-18 to 2025-26 and asked two things: which floors go over most, and does backing them pay the following season?
The spread looks wide, from 56.3% overs at Washington down to 42.9% at Charlotte, against a league-wide 50.3%. But once hindsight is stripped out, chasing the previous two seasons' top over arenas returned −1.4%, and the under side did worse at −4.4%. The arena is mostly a costume worn by whichever roster lives there that year.
Ground 1Washington tops the over list, Charlotte sits bottom
The bars show the eight highest and eight lowest arenas for overs. Washington leads at 56.3%, with Oklahoma City on 54.6% and Atlanta and Milwaukee both on 54.5%. At the other end, Charlotte's 42.9% is clear of Chicago on 45.2% and the LA Lakers on 45.9%.
Here is the caveat that governs everything else. With roughly 350-400 games per arena, the 95% range is about ±5.2 points either side, so most of these gaps sit inside ordinary noise. Only the very ends of the chart stretch beyond what chance alone would comfortably produce.
All arenas: 50.3% over (11,205 games). 95% range ±5.2 at Washington, ±5.2 at Charlotte. Fair over odds at Washington: 1.78.

| Share of games going over the posted total, home arena, 2017-18 to 2025-26 | |
|---|---|
| Washington (355) | 56.3% |
| Oklahoma City (381) | 54.6% |
| Atlanta (369) | 54.5% |
| Milwaukee (387) | 54.5% |
| Miami (382) | 53.7% |
| Sacramento (355) | 53.0% |
| New Orleans (361) | 52.9% |
| Portland (366) | 52.5% |
| Brooklyn (364) | 47.3% |
| New York (385) | 47.0% |
| Orlando (360) | 46.7% |
| Dallas (372) | 46.2% |
| Memphis (364) | 46.2% |
| LA Lakers (375) | 45.9% |
| Chicago (356) | 45.2% |
| Charlotte (350) | 42.9% |
For context, Washington's rate implies fair over odds of 1.78. That looks generous against −110 pricing, but it is a backward-looking number, and the next three charts show what happens when you try to collect it.
Ground 2Overs and unders came from small gaps to the line
This is the chart I care about most, because totals are won against the number, not against a scoreboard. At Washington the average posted total was 227.6 and games produced 230.1. At Charlotte the line averaged 223.3 and games produced 221.6. Neither is a vast miss; both are consistent leans.
Look at Oklahoma City: one of the lowest posted totals here at 223.1, yet it still went over often because games finished at 224.5. A low-scoring building can be an over building if the market sets the bar too low. Atlanta, by contrast, carried a high 228.7 line and still beat it with 231.
Returns are with hindsight: the arenas were picked after the fact.
View the data: posted total vs points scored at the extreme arenas
| Posted total | Points scored | |
|---|---|---|
| Washington (359 games, over at −110 +7.5%) | 227.6 pts | 230.1 pts |
| Oklahoma City (387 games, over at −110 +4.2%) | 223.1 pts | 224.5 pts |
| Atlanta (373 games, over at −110 +3.9%) | 228.7 pts | 231 pts |
| Milwaukee (390 games, over at −110 +4.1%) | 225.4 pts | 227.6 pts |
| Memphis (370 games, under at −110 +2.8%) | 223.4 pts | 222.5 pts |
| LA Lakers (377 games, under at −110 +3.3%) | 225.7 pts | 224 pts |
| Chicago (361 games, under at −110 +4.5%) | 224.2 pts | 223 pts |
| Charlotte (354 games, under at −110 +9.0%) | 223.3 pts | 221.6 pts |
The returns in the labels, +7.5% on Washington overs and +9.0% on Charlotte unders, are pure hindsight. These arenas were picked after the results were in, which is exactly the trap a bettor falls into when scrolling a season-end table.
Ground 3Chasing last two seasons' arenas lost on both sides
Now the honest test. Each season from 2019-20, I backed the over at the five arenas with the highest over rate across the previous two seasons, and the under at the five lowest. Over 1,465 over bets the return was −1.4%; over 1,419 under bets it was −4.4%.
The over side produced one strong year, 2024-25 at +9.1%, and two modest ones, but it also posted −8.4% in 2020-21 and slipped back into the red again in 2025-26. The under side never turned a real profit, with heavy losses in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Break-even at −110 is 52.4%, and recent history alone did not clear it.
1,465 over bets and 1,419 under bets in total.
View the data: chasing last two seasons' over and under arenas
| Over at prior top-5 arenas | Under at prior bottom-5 arenas | |
|---|---|---|
| 2019-20 | −5.1% | +0.4% |
| 2020-21 | −8.4% | −8.0% |
| 2021-22 | −4.9% | −8.1% |
| 2022-23 | +1.1% | −4.0% |
| 2023-24 | +2.5% | −7.1% |
| 2024-25 | +9.1% | −3.2% |
| 2025-26 | −5.4% | 0.0% |
| All seasons | −1.4% | −4.4% |
One hot season is precisely what keeps people chasing. I read that 2024-25 bar as variance flattering a weak idea, not as proof it works.
Ground 4Most arena over rates fade between periods
Splitting the sample into 2017-22 and 2022-26 explains why the chase fails. The correlation between the two periods is just 0.23, so most of the arena-level spread does not carry over. New Orleans had the top rate early at 56.9%, then dropped to 48.2%. The LA Clippers fell from 55.5% to 44.4%, and they changed buildings in this span, which tells you how loosely the venue and the result are tied.
Golden State moved the other way, from 45.8% to 53.8%, also after a change of arena. Washington held almost exactly, 56.4% then 56.2%, and Miami stayed near 53.5% and 53.9%. Those are the exceptions, and even they reflect rosters and pace as much as bricks.
| Arena | Over 2017-22 | Games | Over 2022-26 | Games | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Orleans | 56.9% | 195 | 48.2% | 166 | −8.7 |
| Washington | 56.4% | 195 | 56.2% | 160 | −0.2 |
| LA Clippers | 55.5% | 200 | 44.4% | 169 | −11.1 |
| Minnesota | 53.6% | 196 | 47.6% | 187 | −6.0 |
| Miami | 53.5% | 202 | 53.9% | 180 | +0.4 |
| Golden State | 45.8% | 225 | 53.8% | 173 | +8.0 |
| Memphis | 45.5% | 198 | 47.0% | 166 | +1.5 |
| New York | 45.1% | 193 | 49.0% | 192 | +3.9 |
| Dallas | 44.0% | 200 | 48.8% | 172 | +4.8 |
| LA Lakers | 44.0% | 193 | 47.8% | 182 | +3.8 |
Where to look
- Price the roster first
With a period-to-period correlation of only 0.23, start from current pace, injuries and rotation, then treat the arena as a faint tiebreaker at most.
- Respect the break-even line
At −110 you need 52.4% to profit, and chasing the prior top-five over arenas still returned −1.4%. A trend that only edges past 50% is not enough.
- Discount any arena streak
A 95% range of about ±5.2 points means most arena over rates are noise. Ask whether the lineup that built the streak is still on the floor.
