NFL Domes vs Open-Air Stadiums: Do Favourites Win More Indoors?
Twenty seasons of closing moneylines say favourites under a dome run a fraction ahead of their price. That fraction disappears inside the margin and inside the noise.

Indoor football looks like it should favour the better side. There is no wind, no rain and the footing is clean, so the stronger roster should get its usual edge without the weather adding chaos. I wanted to know whether the moneyline already accounts for that, or whether favourites under a roof beat their price in a way a bettor could use.
The short answer is that the roof barely matters once the price is set. Across 5,254 games, favourites won 66.4% against an average no-margin price of 66.9%. Dome favourites came in at 67.2%, only slightly above their price, and still returned −2.0% at flat stakes. The venue is one more input I check alongside the matchup on my NFL picks and live scores page. It does not stand on its own as an angle.
Ground 1Dome favourites edge their price, open-air ones fall short
Each row shows the average no-margin price next to the actual strike rate. Open-air favourites were priced at 67.1% and won 66.5% of 3,747 games. Dome favourites were priced at 66.6% and won 67.2% of 812 games, a gap of +0.6 pts. Retractable-roof favourites were priced at 66.0% and won 65.2% of 695 games.
View the data: moneyline favourites: priced vs won, by roof
| Priced | Won | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-air (3,747 games) | 67.1% | 66.5% | ±1.5 |
| Dome (812 games) | 66.6% | 67.2% | ±3.2 |
| Retractable (695 games) | 66.0% | 65.2% | ±3.5 |
| All venues (5,254 games) | 66.9% | 66.4% | ±1.3 |
Now look at the error bars. The dome figure carries a range of ±3.2 and the retractable figure ±3.5, both much wider than the gap they would need to explain. Every roof type's range overlaps the others. In fair-price terms, a dome favourite at that strike rate is worth 1.49 decimal against 1.50 outdoors, which is a gap the margin swallows completely.
Ground 2Mid-priced dome favourites carry the whole indoor edge
When I split the results by price band, the small dome edge turns out to sit almost entirely in one cell. Dome favourites priced 60-70% won 68.5% of 273 games against a price of 64.7%, which is +3.8 points. The same band went the other way elsewhere. Open-air favourites there won 62.4% of 1,246 games, priced at 64.8%, and retractable favourites won 60.9% of 235 against 65.0%.
Each cell has at least 228 games.
View the data: won minus priced, by roof and price band
| Priced 50-60% | Priced 60-70% | Priced 70%+ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-air | −1 pts | −2.3 pts | 1.2 pts |
| Dome | −2.9 pts | 3.8 pts | 0.6 pts |
| Retractable | 1.5 pts | −4.1 pts | 0.3 pts |
The cells also contradict each other. In the 50-60% band, dome favourites ran behind price while retractable favourites showed the largest positive figure: 57.0% of 228 games against 55.5%. When the sign flips from one band to the next, I read that as the scatter you get from small samples, not as a structural edge.
Ground 3The dome edge belonged to one era and then reversed
This table is the one that settles it for me. From 2006-2012, dome favourites won 71.4% of 290 games, +3.3 against their price. From 2013-2025 they won 64.9% of 522, slipping to −0.9. Retractable roofs moved the opposite way, from 61.1% at −6.3 in the early era to 66.7% of 510 at +1.2 later.
| Roof | Games 06-12 | Won 06-12 | Games 13-25 | Won 13-25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open-air | 1,251 | 65.4% (−2.7) | 2,496 | 67.0% (+0.4) |
| Dome | 290 | 71.4% (+3.3) | 522 | 64.9% (−0.9) |
| Retractable | 185 | 61.1% (−6.3) | 510 | 66.7% (+1.2) |
This is also where the main caveat applies. Roof type is tied to franchises, and a handful of teams supply most of the indoor games. A strong dome team in one era and a weak one in the next can create these swings without the roof doing anything. What the table is really tracking is which teams played indoors, not the stadium itself.
Ground 4Every roof loses money backing either side blind
Flat stakes on every favourite returned −3.8% outdoors, −2.0% under a dome and −4.0% under a retractable roof. Underdogs returned −2.6% outdoors, −4.7% under a dome and −2.0% under a retractable roof. Across all venues, favourites returned −3.5% and underdogs −2.8%.
View the data: flat-stake moneyline returns by roof
| Favourite | Underdog | |
|---|---|---|
| Open-air | −3.8% | −2.6% |
| Dome | −2.0% | −4.7% |
| Retractable | −4.0% | −2.0% |
| All venues | −3.5% | −2.8% |
The dome favourite is the least bad blind bet in the table, and the dome underdog is the worst. That fits the small strike-rate gap, but no cell shows a positive return. Better roof figures only lose you less, and that is not something you can stake on.
Where to look
- Price the matchup first
Under every roof type, favourites landed close to their no-margin price, with dome favourites only +0.6 pts ahead. Build your number from the trenches and the situational splits, and use the roof only as a minor adjustment.
- Distrust era-specific splits
Dome favourites went from +3.3 against price in 2006-2012 to −0.9 in 2013-2025. Before trusting any venue trend, check which franchise produced it.
- Leave blind roof systems alone
Backing every dome favourite returned −2.0% and every dome underdog −4.7%. Flat backing of either side lost money under every roof type.
Questions bettors ask
Do NFL favourites win more often in domes?
Slightly. Dome favourites won 67.2% against open-air favourites' 66.5%, but the dome range of ±3.2 overlaps every other roof type, so the difference sits inside the noise.
Is betting dome favourites on the moneyline profitable?
Not on this record. Backing every dome favourite at flat stakes returned −2.0% from 2006-2025. That beats the −3.8% outdoors but is still a loss.
Do retractable-roof stadiums behave like domes for betting?
Not reliably. Retractable favourites won 65.2% against a price of 66.0% overall, and their results swung from −6.3 against price in 2006-2012 to +1.2 in 2013-2025.
